There's another diagnostics mode, at least on the Garmin 12. Hold the "Enter" key as you press power and you'll come to a diagnostics screen. It includes statistics, button test stuff, and a display test.

Holding other stuff while you hit power has varying effects, including clearing memory, so be carefull.
