The property of an object which gives off light due to application of electricity.

Electroluminescence is the conversion of electrical energy into light, without using heat as an intermediary. This is different from what light bulbs do. They are incandescent, meaning they glow because the filament inside the bulb is heated to a high temperature (which happens when a current is passed through it).

One example of an electroluminescent thing would be an LED which is lit up.

Another example are the pleasant, blue-green, flat panel electroluminescent displays found in watches, like the Timex Indiglo, and other consumer electronics.
