A format for storing video on CD-ROM. Known as XSVCD for short, eXtended Super VideoCD is an unofficial extension of the popular Super VideoCD format and uses the same codec (MPEG-2), but can use higher bitrates and resolutions to increase video quality. For instance, XSVCD can use PAL and NTSC resolutions instead of the standard CIF. Because it is not an officially recognised standard, compatibility with standalone DVD players is not universal.

Technical Details:

PAL:

• Video: MPEG-2 constant and variable bitrate, 352x288/352x576/720x576, 25fps, up to 4 subtitles
• Audio: MPEG-1 Layer II, 32-384Kbps, up to 2 stereo audio tracks
• Extras: menus and chapters, still pictures @ 704x576 and 352x288

NTSC/NTSC Film:

• Video: MPEG-1 constant and variable bitrate, 352x240/352x480/720x480, 29.97fps (23.976fps for NTSC Film), up to 4 subtitles
• Audio: MPEG-1 Layer II, 32-384Kbps, up to 2 stereo audio tracks
• Extras: menus and chapters, still pictures @ 704x576 and 352x288
