According to the Canadian Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH), the purpose of drilling in the Canadian Military is to, 'contribute to the operational effectiveness of the Canadian Forces by ensuring that the Forces efficiently march and manoeuvre together as one in duty and routine, and by promoting discipline alertness, precision, pride, steadiness and the cohesion necessary for success.'

The most common drill movements1 used in the Canadian and American Military (listed roughly in order of complexity) are:
