Atonal music composed via the systems of twelve-tone music. Devised by Arnold Schönberg, and passed on to his pupils Anton von Webern and Alban Berg, it became widely used by "serious" composers. Even Igor Stravinsky, a fairly anti-atonal man, tried his hand at it once or twice, at a time when Schönberg himself had partly abandoned it.
