Credited to A. Kondrashov. The DMH proposes that synergistic epistasis is abundant enough among deleterious mutations to create a benefit to sexual reproduction great enough to compensate for the two-fold cost of sex. Synergistic epistasis increases the genetic variation in fitness and thus increases the efficacy of selection in removing deleterious mutations from the population.
