An album recorded by an unsigned band in order to promote itself and, with luck, get signed by some record label. The demos are usually of inferior quality than release albums and are usually recorded by the bands themselves with the limited money their members have.
The demo albums are also usually don't get released and therefore valued highly by devoted fans and collectors.
