Plural: Dassies.
These tiny relatives of the elephant are found in South Africa. They look, to me, like a cross between a guinea pig and an extremely ugly guinea pig. Apparently they get eaten by other animals (including birds like storks or some such) and they live in burrows.

I am reliably informed by the toeless wonder that the name is pronounced "dussy". These darn accents!
