A specific method used to improve the limit of resolution of electron microscopy. It basically entails freezing the specimen and looking at the pattern the ice-crystals surrounding it and it makes in scattered electrons. it allows for resolution up to about 10 angstroms (1 nm). X-ray crystallography is slightly better for resolution of structural information, but often more difficult to perform.
