A computer game in which the player builds and maintains a city. Good examples of this are Maxis's SimCity series, and Sierra's Caesar series. City building games should not be confused with strategy games like WarCraft. While you do build something of a city in those games the focus is more on creating a military industrial complex to win a war. While a city building game may deal with war on some level, the main focus is in providing for the needs of the citizens of the city. The trend has been for these to be real time. They also tend to be somewhat addictive as they often can be played without specific goals besides, "Make the biggest/best city you can". There is something fulfilling in starting with a few shacks and creating a complicated thriving metropolis.
