In Jamaica, a chillum is a ritual pipe carved from a coconut shell.

In American marijuana lingo, a chillum is either a specific method of taking a hit, or the one-hitter used in this method. To do a chillum, take a one-hitter between two of your fingers, nestled in the popular remnant of our aquatic ape phase. From here you can go in two directions:
  • one-handed: make a fist out of the hand with the one-hitter in it. The hole formed by your thumb and index finger is your mouthpiece - light the one-hitter and suck.
  • two-handed: cup your hands and put them together so that your thumbs are touching and facing you. Inhale through the hole between your thumbs, and have a friend light the wunnie for you.

A hash pipe. A pipe that enables the user to inhale lots of smoke in a short amount of time, usually used for Marijuana.

A chillum is typically a straight cylinder about 10-15 centimeters (4-6 inches) long. The hole is a centimeter or two (half an inch) across, and the while thing is slightly narrower at the mouth end.

Chillums are made from a variety of materials, but hard wood or unglazed ceramic are the most common. Sometimes they are carved with decorative patterns.
