In the American Jewish communities, an egalitarian group that meets for Jewish worship and study, sometimes in the homes of members rather than a synagogue. They tend to be led by laypersons and oriented to discussion. The word is derived from chaver, which is Hebrew for friend. The chavurah movement started in Jewish Reconstructionist circles, but has spread to other congregations and communities.
