A type of thin Indian bread cooked on a griddle. It is usually made of wheat flour and resembles a tortilla.

A sample chapatti recipe:
2 cups flour
1/4 to 1 cup water
salt, spices (optional, use your imagination)

mix flour and spices (if using) together, add just enough water to form a (somewhat stiff) dough. Knead the dough for ~10 minutes, until it is smooth and pliable. Let the dough rest for 30 mins, then divide it into about 8 pieces. roll out each piece into a thin circle (cover with a damp cloth to keep them from drying out) and place them on a lightly greased hot griddle. When the chapatti becomes translucent (less than 1 min) flip it over and cook the other side. As it cooks you can encourage puffing by lightly pressing on the top of the chapatti. (A wet towel can work well for this.) When lightly browned, remove from heat and enjoy.

Chapatti are good by themselves, with a bit of butter or ghee, or as an edible utensil, to convey curries to your mouth.

Chapatti is the simplest type of indian bread, other types include paratha, nan and puris.
