Many computer space simulation games such as the venerable Wing Commander series have borrowed the idea of the capital ship and adapted it to mean a large spaceship, often armed to the teeth with laser turrets, energy shields, faster-than-light drives, and other science fiction marvels. A capital ship in this sense, often called a capship, can be a frigate, a cruiser, a destroyer, a battleship, or a carrier, though some would argue that the 2 latter ships could be classified as "super-capital ships". In any case, the distinguishing factor is size; anything small enough to be launched from a carrier is considered a strike craft, while larger ships fit into the capital ship category. |
