In a performance (or a film, video, or broadcast), any direct speech to or recognition of the audience. In traditional drama, this may be done as an aside. In modern drama, playwrights such as Bertolt Brecht intentionally break the fourth wall to detach the audience from the action of the play and call attention to the artifice of the theatre.
