Until I was twenty-two, i hear him tell the woman at his table, I only owned two pairs of shoes. I thought having a lot of pairs of shoes was a symbol of bourgeois excess. Now I have running shoes, and working shoes, and running shoes that I wear because they don't smell, and boots, and sandals, and light shoes that I wear to yoga classes. And whatever. It's so much more practical.

I am torn between saying, me too! and feeling superior. I at least would not boast. Her response is muffled - she is facing away from me.
