A German word, meaning both "please" and "you're welcome". Similar to the Italian "prego", the Czech "prosim", and the Polish "prosze".

Immortalized in the ad campaign for Bitburger Bier (a mediocre brew at best), "Bitte ein Bit'!"

Also, strangely applied when purchasing something where one might expect thankyou (danke)

fun when used as a verb, too: "ich bitte Sie"="i beg of you"

the only word in an extended in between songs speech by the only non-German speaking member of a band seen in Munich in 1999 (i.e., bitte bitte bitte bitte, bitte bitte...)
