Introduction
Particularly in gay male circles, bareback is a term used to describe unprotected intercourse - ie. penetration without the protection of a condom.
A full spectrum of opinion exists on the matter - there are those who think that any unprotected sex is wrong; and there are those who do it regardless, ignoring the risks. Particularly in the California area of the USA, barebacking is on the rise, with participants enjoying the danger, and blasé attitude that they can take a cocktail and make it better. This is a rather worrying trend of denial.

Bareback riding is inherently more risky than protected sex, particularly anally, as STDs (such as HIV) and parasites may be transmitted, however a tested, trusting couple may choose to ride bareback as a show of greater intimacy.
The benefits percieved may be the flesh-on-flesh contact, the sensation of the semen, or just avoiding the 'sterility' of adding condoms to sexual contact.
Opponents may feel that it is wrong due to possible STDs, or just that it is particularly dirty. Many straight males state that bareback gay sex is disgusting. Strangely, they are more than happy to perform unprotected anal sex on their female partners, however.
General advice would be to not indulge in promiscuous bareback activity. Only partake with a trusted partner after careful consideration, negotiation and informed consent of both parties.
