This is a
term for the the
process of
porting code from a new
platform to an older one.
An example: DVD filesystem support has been backported from Linux kernel 2.3 to 2.2. Alan Cox has also expressed plans to backport USB from 2.3 to 2.2.18 (or so I read anyhow).
