Autosomes are simply chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes. In humans, the term refers to chromosomes 1 through 22--everything except the X and the Y chromosomes. Many human diseases involve autosomal disorders; for example, Huntington's chorea is caused by a mutation in a gene on chromosome 4.
