The inability to execute a skilled or learned motor act, such as opening a child-proof bottle. It is not related to paralysis or lack of comprehension, but by a cortical lesion that prevents repetition at the hardware level. This is a symptom found in sufferers of Alzheimer's disease.

Greek for "inability to act".

Apraxia is a disturbance in organisation of voluntary action, caused by a lesion in the frontal association area. Symptoms do not typically include any weakness or sensory loss, and simple movements can be made.
Sufferers of apraxia are unable to perform complex acts involving sequences of muscle contraction or planned strategy, such as combing hair.

Other disorders of cortical association areas include agnosia, unilateral hemi-neglect, aphasia, and alexia.
