Small cavities in the body - particularly the microscopic ones found in the lungs. The tiny sacs form a corrugated, densely ramified surface which allows a greater surface area of interaction with the air coming into the lung. Blood vessles at the alveolar surface release carbon dioxide and take in fresh oxygen.
