Islamic scholar. Born 810, died 870.

Throughout his lifetime, al-Bukhari was engrossed in the study of hadith. According to tradition, al-Bukhari delved into more than 600,000 hadith and extracted from these approximately 7,000, which became the subject of his magnum opus, al-Sahih (Arabic: "the real" or "the true").

Already highly regarded during his life, al-Bukhari's work has since had a special status in Sunni Islam as one of the most valued of hadith collections.
