in the aerospace world, an air-breathing propulsion system or vehicle is one which requires atmospheric oxygen, taken in during flight, in order to function. Jet engines, turbojets, ramjets, and reciprocating engines are all air-breathing engines. Anything which carries its own oxidizer or has no need for such is not; rockets and electric engines are counterexamples.
