The maximum altitude above sea level at which a given aircraft and maintain normal horizontal flight.

The reason an absolute ceiling exists is because planes fly due to air pressure changes caused by the shape of thier wings. At a certain altitude, the density of air isn't enough to support the weight of the plane.
