A nickname derisively used by Confederate troops for the Federal ironclad U.S.S. Monitor. So called because the innovative design of a low profile hull and single turret reminded one southern wit of a "cheesebox on a raft". The name caught on, and was used by troops on both sides to refer to the vessel during the Penninsular Campaign in the American Civil War.
