A method for encoding color information, typicaly for analog motion video. The luminance and chrominance channels are seperated, higher bandwidth is allocated to luminance since the human eye is more sensitive to variations in that channel. The Y component carries the luminance, with U and V carrying chrominance information. For NTSC and PAL, Y carries the luminance while scaled versions of the (R-Y) and (B-Y) color difference signals are used to modulate the chrominance subcarrier.

ps. there are some technicalities, namely I make generalizations to encompas YIQ, Y(R-Y)(B-Y), and YUV.
