The y axis is at the point x=0 on most graphs, but it does not have to be. It is vertical in most 2 dimensional graphs, horizontal and pointing at you in most 3 dimensional graphs, and kata in the most widely used 4 dimensional graphing format, and the y-values that a function can have are the range of that function.
