eXtended Memory Specification. This is a standard for accessing pages of memory beyond the base megabyte of address space on the Intel x86 line of processors. XMS is really just a software hack that places the processor in protected mode, repages, and returns to real mode. XMS allows whiney idiot DOS programmers to use more than 1 MB of memory.
