An ingenious
Inuit device made of
sinew and
whalebone designed to
kill wolves. It consists of two
springy pieces of whalebone, sharpened at the ends and lashed together to make a cross. The ends are bent in and tied with thin sinew, and then the whole thing is tucked inside a chunk of
blubber and frozen. It is left where a
wolf will eat it.
Once inside the wolf, the blubber thaws and the sinew is digested, allowing the whalebone cross to spring open. The wolf's entrails are torn asunder. The wolf dies.
This barbaric method was adopted by settlers in the 19th and 20th centuries.
