An author of alternate history fiction, he is a professor at Montreat College. He has written The Lost Regiment series, about a regiment of Union soldiers in the Civil War who are transported to another world, in which humans are cattle for another race. He has also co-authored 1945 with Newt Gingrich.

The Lost Regiment shows the evolution of warfare - the Hordes initially fight human with arrows and swords, facing cannon and musket. The Hordes over time learn, and Forstchen does an excellent job of discussing the logistics of running a campaign across a spread front. A must read.
