German archaeologist who discovered 2000-year-old batteries (clay jars with necks covered with asphalt and iron rods encased in copper cylinders) at Khujut Rabu, an ancient Parthian settlement outside of Baghdad in 1938. They were functional and it is thought they were used for electroplating rather than producing power.
