I know, I know . . . I'm supposed to
vote. It's my
duty to my country. If I don't vote, I don't have a right to complain. It's
apathetic people like me who let our horrible
politicians get into office.
Maybe that's right and maybe that's wrong. What I do know is that I'm young enough that this will be my first time legally voting in a presidential campaign (I missed the last one by a few months). I also know that I could care less about the two frontmen for the political parties that we're offered right now. I didn't even have any interest in the ones that were running before the most recent primaries.
Why? Well, everyone wants to change something. One guy wants to maintain your right to carry a gun and practice your free-speech, but he wants to take away a person's right to abortion (not something I agree with in and of itself, but not a place for a government to step in as far as I am concerned -- but I digress) and stick a religious document with the words "Thou shalt have no other God before me" in every public classroom. He also wants to raise your taxes. Another wants to take away your free speech and your privacy but keep government out of the womb.
They all have a few good points (that they probably won't ever live up to) but not a single one of them doesn't bring with them some personal agenda that will affect major rights and foundations of the country. They're all like the new boss who comes into your company and wants to change everything they can get their hands on. It doesn't matter if it's necessary or helpful -- as long as it's new and it's theirs. It's rediculous.
Also, our politicians are elected by popularity. All we have is what they promise us and what we think they look like on the latest million-dollar ad campaign. Since when do we take someone at their word? Good grief.
You could put these guys into a chess competition or give them IQ tests and allow the winner to be elected.
Hell, if you stick a half dozen of these blue-blooded rich-boys (notice they're always rich businessmen or lawyers?) into an arena and give them each a choice of hand to hand combat weapons, we could have a lot of fun. And whoever comes out alive is going to be one bad mutha. That's a fellow you want standing up for your country.
This all sounds rather chaotic and indiscriminate, but is it any different than what we have now? No matter how many people say "But the American people have the power...", the truth is that money buys what you need to get elected. So you may as well get the money thing over and just make intelligence or braun the prerequisite.
