A movie depicting the battle of Hurtgen Forest in 1944. Directed by John Irvin, starring Ron Eldard, Frank Whaley, Dwight Yoakam et al.

It is a realistic and cynic story of a private soldier, psychologically exhausted, who is the only survivor of his platoon. He gets promoted to lead a squad of inexperienced soldiers into an almost certain death.

The acting is very good, as are the costumes and the setting. The combat scenes lacks realism technically, although the actors do a good job of portraying the frenetic struggle.

Released almost at the same time as the Steven Spielberg movie Saving Private Ryan, which is much better technically but with an inferior storyline, the movie probably would have gotten much more attention if not shadowed by Spielberg's giant project.
