Encephalopathy caused by thiamine deficiency. Usually associated with alcohol abuse. Characterized by confusion, apathy, loss of muscular coordination, abnormal eye movement, and decreased mental function as a result of hemorrhagic lesions of the gray matter of the brain. Other features include memory loss and confabulation.
