WZBC is a 1000-watt college radio station located in Newton, Massachusetts, on the Chestnut Hill campus of Boston College, broadcasting at a frequency of 90.3 MHz. The station has its roots in still-operating WVBC-AM, founded in 1960, which broadcasts around the BC campus using carrier current. The station's musical content includes rock, electronic, folk, reggae and other Caribbean music, experimental, modern classical, and many other underexplored regions of the musical landscape. In addition, ZBC also broadcasts live BC Eagles sports games.
WZBC was named one of the top 10 college stations in the country by Rolling Stone magazine in 1990, and has been a fairly prominent figurehead in Boston's alternative music scene since 1973. Artists as diverse KMFDM, The Police, Steven Stapleton of Nurse with Wound, and Peter Christopherson of Coil have performed in the studio.
The station is completely managed and operated by full-time BC students, with the assistance of members of the surrounding community and one faculty adviser. This situation is similar to WRIU (which shares the same broadcast frequency) and the exact polar opposite of WERS, Emerson College's radio station, which is run by professionals with student staff members.
In addition to on-air activity, the station also sponsors and organizes events. Anniversary shows, the biannual Brainwaves Festival, and appearances by obscure artists are all supported by the Z. Online, WZBC is one of the first stations to embrace Spinitron for online playlist accounting. They have recently begun archiving all broadcasts available to the public which dovetails nicely with Spinitron to create a giant two-week backup of station audio with playlists included.
