Vsevolod II was the grandson of Grand Prince Sviatoslav II of Kievan Russia. He took over the throne from his cousin Vyacheslav in 1139 after sacking the city of Cherngiv and defeating the forces sent by Vyacheslav and his supporters to punish him. Vsevolod was allied with the Polovtsi, a tribe who were traditionally were the enemies of the Russians, and so gained enough strength to essentially rule Russia. He died in 1146 and was very briefly succeeded by his brother Igor II.
