A Portuguese wine produced in the northern province of Entre-Douro-e-Minho. Vinho Verde is a slightly acidic, fragrant wine. It is petillant, light and thirst quenching. It is generally drunk cold, in large drafts, rather than sipped, and it is a great wine to drink on a hot summer day.

The "Verde" in the name could literally be translated as "green," but the wine is usually white, sometimes red or rose. The "greenness" is a reference to the fact that is is a "young wine," which should be drunk while fresh, within the first two years after vintage.

According to Grossman's Guide To Wines, Beer, and Spirits, the wine's petillance results from the high malic acid content, which is a consequence of the vines being "trained up high, providing a canopy of shade for the fruit, while avoiding the radiating heat from the ground."
