Virtual Path Identifier.
In ATM technology, a virtual path contains one or many virtual circuits. The
8-bit
VPI (when combined with the VCI) uniquely identifies the path of an ATM cell;
a VPI/VCI identifier is similar in function to the MAC address on an Ethernet
network.
