VM is short for virtual machine. When talking about the Java programming language, it is often written JVM, to mean Java Virtual Machine.

Among Operating System programmers, VM is also used as an abbreviation for virtual memory. It's also sometimes used as a noun to refer to the whole virtual memory subsystem of the OS.
