A bright green type of garnet (as opposed to the more common non-red garnets, which are usually light green). The name is pronounced "you've-ahr-uv-vite." At one time it was called "the emerald of the Urals" because of its discovery in Russia, though Turkey, Italy and Finland have produced some also. It's quite brittle and difficult to cut nicely, so it is not much used as a gemstone.
