Originally led by Brigadier Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart they were formed to deal with strange and unusual threats to the safety of the Earth (a bit like a military
X-Files) after the affair of "The Web of Fear" where the London Underground was infested with Yetis. Their first operation was the defeat of an attempted
Cyberman invasion.
They have faced threats from Sea Devils and
Daleks to deadly shop manikins and ancient spirits. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart has now retired to teach in a private school and the new commander is Brigadier Winifred Bambera.
