A tuxedo cat is a cat with distinctive black and white markings. A tuxedo cat is not a breed of cat , but simply a cat with certain patterns. Tuxedo cats are almost always domestic shorthairs, and they can have parents, siblings or kittens that do not have their distinctive markings.

A tuxedo cat has black fur covering about three quarters of its body. It has white markings on its nose, its neck, its chest, its belly or loins and often on its paws. Of course, not every tuxedo cat has markings in every one of these places.

And for some odd reason, a great many tuxedo cats are named "boots" or (as in a famous case) "socks".
