A tsukubai is a stone basin containing water for rinsing one's mouth, feet, and hands. They are found in Japanese gardens for chanoyu. As well as rinsing the body, one rinses one's sense of oneself by lowering oneself to the level of the water. Thus, "tsukubai" literally means "to crouch". This is a form of misogi.
