A very liberal style of play in soccer that allows any player to take on any role at any time (except, of course, the goalie.) It relies on having a teamful of flexible and skilled players who can play any position, move the ball around fluidly and continually attack from all sides.

Properly done it is, I think, very beautiful to watch.

Total Football was dominant in the early 1970's when Holland's Ajax, under the leadership of Rinus Michels and behind the superlative play of Johan Cruyff, took the European Cup in 1971, 1972 and 1973.
