Tosha Kiyonari

Teacher of the Taiko beat

Born: Unknown

Died: -----

Tosha Kiyonari who was known by the “apprentice name” Motoei Onozato, is one of the four founders of the first Taiko-only group, Oedo Sukeroku Taiko. The only problem with researching him is there is damn near no information about this martial music teacher. The extent of what I could find is below.

Tosha Kiyonari has been playing the Taiko Drums since he was 12 years old. He was and is the first professional player of the Ensemble of the Drums in Tokyo, and also is one of the originators of the performance of the drums in Oedo Sukeroku Taiko’s style of playing. It has been said, several times, that Kiyonari is always studying how to play the drum in other new and different styles, from other players. Kiyonari is now has aprox. 60 pupils, but the ratio of Men to Women is about 5 to 1 (5:1).

Tosha Kiyonari specializes in the Okedo daiko drums, the Shime Daiko drums, and the middle, large, and portable, standard drums.
