A drums prodigy from Boston who played in jazz clubs long before he was old enough to buy a drink; Miles Davis stole him from Jackie McLean's group when he was 17. A subtle, inventive drummer who lost some of his subtlety when he spent a decade in the fusion milieu - but his playing was cool in any context. Returned to acoustic music in the 80's and 90's, and also got a degree in composition. Died 1997.
