According to the hagiography surrounding the Virgin of Guadalupe, the church built in honour of her in Mexico City (the world's largest Marian shrine) is supposedly built on top of a pre-Columbian cult site, dedicated to an Aztec mother goddess named Tonantzin. However, neither archaeological nor textual support for this supposition is available.
