Tokonoma is an alcove in a traditional Japanese room called washitsu. It is the size of one-third or half a tatami mat, with somewhat raised floor board made of wood or tatami. It serves as a display space of art objects such as earthenware, hanging scrolls, flower arrangements (ikebana).
Tokonoma plays an important roll in Japanese tea ceremonies in that people would appreciate the beauty of art objects there.
