The time taken by a particle or a signal to go from one place to another, usually by zipping through empty space. This concept, amazingly boring as it sounds is the basis for many rangefinding techniques and for time of flight spectrometry.

Basically, rather than measuring directly mass or length we find it easier to throw something that travels at a known velocity at sensors and measure some time difference.
